After graduate school, he worked for over a decade in the private sector for various architectural firms. Projects included: public and private school renovations and additions, new office buildings, retail finish outs, customs houses, and several residential remodels and additions.
In 1993 he joined the development services division of the San Antonio Housing Authority as an Architect and Project Manager. Projects included but were not limited to: the management of the design and construction contracts for new apartment complexes, the development of a residential neighborhood, the creation of a learning center and countless renovations of existing facilities. After over a decade with SAHA. He moved to begin work at the City Architects Office of San Antonio Public Works Department. Projects included but were not limited to: the management of the design and construction contracts for work at: public libraries, the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, and over twenty fire stations.
In 2011 through 2022, Mr. Laven served as the Architect and Facility Coordinator for the San Antonio Fire Department. Mr. Laven's vast experience and knowledge he gained from years of architectural practice and working directly for public entities, makes him in irreplaceable member of the DSA team. He places special emphasis on planning secure, comfortable, energy efficient, and extremely durable projects that are easily maintained using commonly available building components and equipment. His knowledge is invaluable and will heighten the design and value of any project he, and the DSA team undertake.
